In honor of the twentieth anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II, the Boston College Symphony Orchestra and University Chorale will give the first US performance of Professor Ralf Gawlick's choral-orchestra work, Źródło. Źródło, composed in 2004, commemorates the visit by Pope John Paul II to Boston in 1979. The music incorporates text from a poem by Pope John Paul II. It reflects, as the composer writes, "the poem's various psychological landscapes" and, ultimately, "a serenity shaped and acquired by the presence of grace." The concert features soprano Clara Meloni, who will also sing with the BCSO on the first movement of Henryk Górecki's Symphony No. 3, thematically underscoring Pope John Paul II's Polish ancestry and highlighting aesthetic ties to late-twentieth-century Christian minimalism. The University Chorale will also perform works by Górecki.
